This article provides a literature review on the recent development of the geography of religion. Specifically, it aims to highlight two issues: (a) the theoretical and methodological evolution of this sub-field, gained by the recognition of the reciprocal relations between environment and religious experience as well as of the fluidity within the separation between sacred and secular; (b) the relations between state and religion in decision making processes and definition of urban policy. Moreover, the article illustrates those concepts in a brief analysis of a case study, the new town of Ave Maria Town in Florida.
