AB  - 	This article examines the different conceptions of Italy developed within the Roman world during the second century BCE. In particular, it focuses on the new geographical extension of the term “Italy,” investigates the implications of this development, and explores attempts to construct an exclusive ideological identity. At the same time, it compares conceptions that emphasized a close connection between Italic antiquity and Greek culture. The second century BCE reveals a remarkable variety of interpretations concerning the idea of Italy, the origins of the peoples who inhabited it, and the cities that dotted the peninsula, especially when these themes were approached from geographical, political, and ethnic perspectives.
Questo articolo esamina le diverse concezioni dell’Italia sviluppatesi nel mondo romano nel corso del II secolo a.C. In particolare, si concentra sulla nuova estensione geografica del termine «Italia», ne analizza le implicazioni ed esplora i tentativi di costruire un’identità ideologica esclusiva. Allo stesso tempo, mette a confronto le concezioni che sottolineavano uno stretto legame tra l’antichità italica e la cultura greca. Il II secolo a.C. rivela una notevole varietà di interpretazioni riguardanti l’idea di Italia, le origini dei popoli che la abitavano e le città che costellavano la penisola, specialmente quando questi temi venivano affrontati da una prospettiva geografica, politica ed etnica.
