TY - EJOUR AU - Benedetta Guerzoni T1 - Il "nemico armeno" nell'impero ottomano: le immagini TT - AB - The construction of the image of the Armenians as a political enemy, rather than an ethnicity to exterminate, begun as early as in the 19th century, under sultan Abdul Hamid the second. The Armenians were represented as terrorists, traitors and as a destabilizing factor for the inner order of the Ottoman empire. This line was continued by the Turkish nationalist party the Young Turks in the early 20th century, a period in which keeping control over the empire was a challenge. Executions became regular, also before and after the Armenian genocide. The images of executed Armenians circled, also in European press, as the Armenian question was also of international, diplomatic interest. The same was the case of the images of murdered muslims and weapons used by the Armenians during the killings. The photographical material was actually of great importance in the process of creating a totalitarian regime and justifying it's existence. AD - CY - Bologna DO - 10.1473/stor4
