"under God" nel "Pledge of Allegiance"

Il "Pledge of Allegiance" è il giuramento di fedeltà alla nazione che si pronuncia in alcune cerimonie pubbliche e, soprattutto, in molte scuole statunitensi.

Il giuramento aggiornato dopo il 1954 recita: «I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all».

La frase «nation under God» deriva dal celebre discorso di Gettysburg, pronunciato da Abraham Lincoln il 19 novembre 1863: «It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. and that government of the people. by the people. for the people. shall not perish from the earth».
